Tips & Tricks: Five Tips To Help Residents Get Started In The Garden This Spring

To many Spring welcomes warmer weather, longer days and admiring the abundance of colourful plants and flowers a bloom. Spring is the optimal time to spend in the garden, enjoying fresh air and tending to your flower beds. Here are five top tips and tricks we have found to help residents prepare their garden this Spring.

Tip 1: Brushing off the dust on the old gardening tools

It is a good idea to start with the basics and make sure your gardening tools are in good nick! Start by giving your tools a clean to rid of any bugs and disease – this will lower the risk of infection in your plants. Don’t forget about a durable pair of gardening gloves. When you’re working in your garden, it is important to protect your hands from any unwanted cuts and scrapes.

Tip 2: It’s time to roll up the sleeves!

After a long winter, a good spring clean of your garden is in order. According to the Urban Cultivator flowers and other plants much prefer a tidy place to grow. Start by removing any dead leaves from the soils surface and from around your garden beds. Next you want to cut back any dried foliage and prune any summer-blooming trees and shrubs. The Urban Cultivator also suggests that if you have perennial plants it is a good idea to cut back the dead growth.

Tip 3: Soil preparation is key

According to Better Homes & Gardens, soil preparation is key to help plants thrive all year round. Composts, manures, or mulch are a great way to improve your soil before planting and is an easy way to help your garden look polished. Mulch also helps the soil to retain moisture for your plants and can even help to keep those pesky weeds down.

Tip 4: A good dose of fertiliser

Before the growing seasons kicks off, Bunnings Greenlife Buyer, Katrina Gatt, suggests giving your garden a good once over with fertiliser. Katrina suggests using soluble fertilisers to any pre-planted veggies, using liquid fertiliser on potted plants and using specialist fertilisers for roses, citrus and orchards.

Tip 5: Greener pastures

Now is a great time to focus on getting your grass looking green and luscious. Bunnings Greenlife Buyer, Katrina Gatt, suggests early spring is the optimal time to aerate your lawn with your garden fork and to apply weed killer to remove broadleaf weeds and bindiis. Katrina also suggests following up a few weeks later with a lawn fertiliser to keep your grass growing and to help prevent weeds.
