Rosetta turns 30!
This year the Rosetta community in Victor Harbour is celebrating its 30th birthday! We spoke with homeowners who have been in the community since the early days about their memories of Rosetta over the years.
Maureen Maylin and husband Glen came across a brochure about the new Rosetta Village when they were stopping for ice-cream one day, “We decided straight away that it offered everything we wanted, easy access to the beach, shopping, countryside and close to a hospital and medical help. Moving into Rosetta in 1994 there were only five houses in the community and now the village has grown to over 300 houses!”
When the Community Centre was built, there were regular Happy Hour and Bingo nights, and Maureen also was a regular at the weekly craft group. The community also had a workshop where the men made children’s wooden toys for Xmas and donated them to the Smith Family and Salvation Army. They received certificates of appreciation which are still in the craft room. Ladies also used the workshop and Maureen still has some plant boxes she made in her backyard.
Frank and Joan Geyer moved into their new home in Rosetta Village in April 1994. They fondly remember the social atmosphere in the community, “we used to set up trestles in the street and sit around on warm nights, having a drink and chatting. When the Hall was being built, we had a pig on the spit and management joined and supplied all the drinks. We even had our own golf team.” The best part of living here is knowing there’s always someone nearby to lend a hand, you feel safe and secure in this wonderful place we chose to live in all those years ago.”
After emigrating from Zimbabwe without a lot of savings Maureen and Don McKenzie were grateful that they could afford to purchase a home. “We thought house and land prices were beyond our budget. Rosetta was just right for us and has been for nearly 28 years.” The McKenzie’s enjoy community life and Maureen says, “there so many fun activities on offer, and physical activities to keep us mobile. I have run a weekly exercise to music class for over 20 years, and produced DVDs so people can keep up their exercise while on holiday. We also enjoy the peacefulness of the village, and the friendly wave or chat as we meet others on our walks. We have made many lasting friendships. Rosetta is a good place to live.”
