A Brand-New Bowling Green Has Residents at Hometown’s Red Gum Community Bursting With Excitement And Showcasing Their Talent

Keen lawn bowlers at Hometown Australia’s Red Gum lifestyle community have taken advantage of the new sports and recreation facilities, hosting bi-weekly bowls competitions on the brand new competition grade bowling green.

The new surface is appealing to residents from all walks of life and has already sparked interest in a social setting. Just ask Red Gum resident and bowling champion, Patrick McClellan, who has been making extremely good use of the new bowling green to further enhance his skills and social life.

Patricks enjoys the sport as it constantly challenges him to improve and benefits all aspects of his life – it is a passion he shares with his wife Irene.

“I was inspired to start bowls when living in Griffith as my uncle was a local champion and the community had a memorial tournament in his honour. I progressed quickly in rank of the sport but eventually stepped back from competition to focus more on the social aspect of the sport and inspiring others to join”

The sentiment was shared by many other residents such as Dianne who said “it was wonderful to be back playing again, the bowling green is beautiful. Brilliant construction”.

Carolyn, a first time bowler, said she was “looking forward to learning how to play, it looks excellent.”

It was hoped that the rejuvenated bowling green would serve as a catalyst for increased social activity and it is safe to say that this venture was a success.

Hometown Australia communities make it a priority to build fantastic sports and recreation facilities for the residents as it makes such an impact on physical and mental health, and in the case of bowling, the low impact exercise and the social aspect has the majority of the residents out and about.

The Red Gum social committee can now plan future events for the benefit of all residents.

Red Gum Bowls group play competitions every Tuesday and every Wednesday, and either host other villages or travel to other villages in the area.

Patrick and Irene conduct social training on Wednesdays.
